The truth about using insurance
It’s about privacy.
Using Insurance for Psychotherapy
Some clients choose to use their health insurance benefits to help reduce individual therapy costs. Couples and group therapy is not covered by insurance. While this can be helpful financially, it’s important to understand what’s involved.
Out-of-Network Provider
Dr. Shelley is an out-of-network provider with all insurance companies. This means:
You must have a diagnosable mental health condition to be eligible for insurance reimbursement.
After your first session, Dr. Shelley will let you know if you meet the criteria.
If you qualify, you'll receive a Superbill (a detailed receipt) after each session that will be automatically uploaded into your patient account that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement.
Privacy Considerations
Using insurance means your provider may:
Request access to information about your treatment in order to process claims.
This means your therapy sessions may not remain fully private.
However, outside of insurance involvement, your visits are completely confidential, except in the following situations:
Suspected child or elder abuse
Risk of harm to yourself or others
HSA & FSA Payments Welcome
Dr. Shelley also accepts Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA):
These accounts use pre-tax dollars to pay for therapy sessions.
No treatment information is shared with insurance companies when using HSA or FSA funds.
If you have questions about payment options, reimbursement, or confidentiality, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
